Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, and lies about 60 miles off the mainland, and approximately the same distance off Majorca. With a predominantly rugged coastline that houses several sandy coves and beaches, it is only 25 miles long and 14 miles wide. In recent years it has been attracting predominantly young and lively holidaymakers drawn to the main tourist areas like San Antonio and Ibiza Town but there is a lot more to this stunningly beautiful little island than its nightlife. In fact, most of the northern half of the island is made up of unspoilt forest which proves very popular with cyclists and walkers. Santa Eulalia on the east coast is Ibiza's third largest tourist destination that is a long established resort particularly popular with families and couples. It's nightlife is considerably more laid back and there are some nice sandy beaches in the area such as the beautiful S'Argamassa. The nearby resorts of Es Cana to the north and Cala Llonga to the south are also popular with families. Es Cana is best known as being home to the weekly 'hippy market' which attracts visitors from all over the island. It's a popular little resort in its own right.
The capital of the island is Ibiza Town and it is a mere 7km from the airport. This charming, historical town has a vibrant nightlife centred on Sa Penya near the port and is home to some of Ibiza's best nightclubs as well as many great bars and restaurants
Food and drink.
In Ibiza you can find a wide variety of fast food restaurants serving a wide variety of English, German and Italian fare, but why not sample the wonderful local Balearic dishes. Much of the best cooking is made from simple, local ingredients. Fish and shellfish is the mainstay and are usually fresh off the boats that morning. Meat and game also feature on local menus and are popular in hearty stews. Olive oil is of an exceptional quality here and is used in many dishes. Some local specialities to look out for are Pan con tomate (toasted bread with pulped tomatoes and olive oil), open sandwiches made with local cheese and Sobrasada (local sausage), Sopa Mallorquinas (vegetable stew). Paella (based on seafood and sometimes meat with rice and saffron) generally served to two people or more.
Bullit de peix (fish stew), and Caldereta de langosta (fish casserole) to name but a few.
Ibiza produces wine made in the traditional way with grapes from indigenous vines and have recently been granted their own quality standards through the Vins de la terra Eivissa denomination.
Fr'gola is a traditional Ibizan drink taken after your meal alone or with ice. It has a strong herby taste and is made primarily from thyme.
Sangria although not strictly speaking a unique Ibiza drink, this Spanish favourite is found all over the island and makes a perfect refreshment on a warm day. Sangria is generally made from red wine, sugar, lemonade, chopped fruit and a mixture of liquors.
